SERTICH INTRODUCES SANITARY SEWER DISTRICT LEGISLATION

Representative Tony Sertich (DFL-Chisholm) introduced legislation allowing local referendums in regards to the Central Iron Range Sanitary Sewer District (CIRSSD) today, the first day bills were allowed to be introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives. The 2009 legislature convened last week. Senator David Tomassoni will introduce the bill in the Senate later this week.

The district was created several years ago as a collaborative effort of Range cities to study and create a comprehensive plan where shared sewer services could be combined in order to create economic development in Iron Range business and housing.

“During the fall campaign, I pledged to introduce this legislation on the first day. We need to continue to work on this idea in order to address concerns brought forth by the cities, townships and residents,” Sertich said.

The legislation allows local participating communities the option to hold a local referendum and decide by a vote of the people whether their community should participate in the comprehensive plan.

“Most importantly, we need to know if local citizens want to proceed with this idea and if so, at what level of involvement,” Sertich said.
